Taking the Classroom out of the Classroom
"Certain majors require certain tools to help make sure their students succeed; film requires cameras, astronomy requires telescopes, animal science requires animals, etc. When it comes to marine affairs majors, however, a little more than access to the coast is necessary. The University of Rhode Island offers students a chance to get hands-on experience on a research vessel that reconstructs a typical learning environment from a classroom to a boat." This article discusses how the University of Rhode Island provides students of certain majors access to the school's bay campus and research vessels.
Local Coffee Spot Encourages Patrons to "Just Go Topless"
"Local coffee spot encourages customers to 'just go topless' in a bid to help save our oceans. Cool Beans Cafe, located at 18 Kingstown Rd. in Narragansett, has gone strawless in their latest endeavor to push to be more environmentally friendly. Where the straws once were, the restaurant now advertises their sip-thru lids or to 'just go topless.'" This article discusses how a local Rhode Island coffee shop is pushing to be more eco-friendly.
One Month and 17 Minutes Later: Remembering Parkland
"'This is what democracy looks like! This is what democracy looks like!' This was the chant we heard coming from a protest of people walking down Columbia University’s library steps. One month had passed since the Parkland shooting. Students and people everywhere took to social media to organize a nationwide school walkout protesting our country’s gun laws. It was set to start at 10 A.M. and last 17 minutes, one minute for every victim killed in the shooting." This paper discusses my personal experience during the nationwide school walkouts one month after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I wrote this paper for an assignment that asked us to discuss a performance of power.
The Speaker of the Seas
"Everyone knows the story of the Lorax. A little orange guy who pops out of a tree exclaiming that he is the “guardian of the forest” and “speaker of the trees.” But who advocates for the oceans and the species that live within it? The University of Rhode Island professor Bradley Wetherbee is one." This article discusses a URI Professor's research regarding sharks.
Carmen(1983): Dance as a Film Style
"The 1983 film, Carmen, directed and choreographed by Carlos Sauras and María Pagés, combines the use of film and dance to create an original display of a film that drives the dance, while the dance simultaneously drives the film. By using certain cinematic styles and techniques, the pair create a successful film that takes the viewer from behind the scenes of the rehearsal for the opera, Carmen, to not being able to distinguish between what is the reality of the characters within the film and the fictitious lives of the characters’ roles in the opera." This paper explores and argues the use of dance as a cinematic style within the film.
Curiosity Killed the Shark
"Every year, the earth’s top predator is responsible for millions of deaths. This predator is dangerous to lives, the ocean’s ecosystem, and the future of health for our planet. These assailants don’t swim the oceans hunting for fish though, they walk on land among large corporations, fisheries, global trade markets, etc. Humans are responsible for the death of approximately one shark every 3.17 seconds." This research paper explores and discusses the relationship between humans and certain shark species.
